Teaching Philosophy

IMG_9190.HEIC

My students and their successes are my main priorities as a teacher. Success looks different for every student, especially in the arts. Student needs will change day-by-day and I aim to meet my students where they are while respecting their unique backgrounds, culture, and learning styles.

Learning something new, especially art, isn't easy. I find it important to remind students that what they are learning can be difficult, and it's ok to trust in the process. Learning something difficult is rewarding. Giving students room to experiment can give them confidence to try something more challenging. It is important to me to create a safe and trusting classroom environment through mutual respect, where students feel comfortable sharing ideas and asking for help. I believe in the abilities of my students, and encourage them to believe in themselves as well.

I am an active participation in the art classroom. I will rarely be behind my desk - rather, performing live demonstrations, giving 1x1 help, or monitoring the classroom. Art education isn't a one-size-fits-all. If something isn't working or my students are not successful, I will adapt and change my lesson to ensure student success. While I may be the teacher, I will also be a life-long student -– consistently learning how I can be a better teacher for my students and adapting my classroom management and lessons as needed.
